As always, the beginning of a new year, and new decade, signifies a time to reflect on how we can positively change and improve our lives. If health is a top priority on your list this year, acupuncture can help you achieve your goals.
Here is how:
Resolution 1: Weight loss / weight management
After a month full of gatherings, excessive eating and drinking, and complete disregard of whatever regime you may have had beforehand, losing weight is the number one New Year’s resolution made. Acupuncture can assist you in reaching your target weight by encouraging digestive function, balancing emotions, improving metabolism, reducing appetite and by managing cravings.
This is achieved through regular treatments, as well as dietary advice, which focuses on minimising any strain on the digestive system, thereby strengthening it. The points are chosen through identifying your individual imbalances, and from a Western medical perspective, certain points have been shown to increase the function of the nervous, endocrine, and digestive system, which in turn boosts energy, aids the absorption of nutrients, regulates bowel, controls overeating and reduces anxiety.
Acupuncture can be a powerful tool for healthy weight loss, both on its own and as a secondary tool to other weight management programs.
Resolution 2: Learn something new
If you’ve decided to take on a challenge in the new year, such as learning a new language, or to further your skills in your chosen field, acupuncture can help. Various studies have shown acupuncture to improve memory, concentration and general mental clarity.
Resolution 3: Feel better – pain free
If pain is standing in the way of you leading a healthy, happy life, acupuncture can help. Pain relief is one of acupuncture’s greatest attributes, and the most recognised part of its therapeutic properties. It’s main benefits is that it has no side effects, which pain killers often do (when taken long term). It can be helpful for all types of pain, regardless of it’s origin or location.
Acupuncture also increases blood flow and thus speeds up the natural healing process.
Resolution 4: Reduce stress
Stress is the root of all evil as they say, and so many of us suffer from it. In some cases it’s a driver towards getting things done, and can be seen as good, but once it gets too overpowering, it can cause illness and general deterioration of health. Acupuncture has been shown to have an effect on reducing stress and anxiety, as well as lowering blood pressure.
Various self-help techniques work well in combination with the acupuncture, such as yoga, breathing techniques, relaxation, and moderate exercise.
Resolution 5: Quit smoking
This is one of the ‘big ones’ on the list of popular New Year’s resolutions. In the short term, acupuncture can help reduce the craving. This applies mostly to the first 48 hours, when the nicotine is still in the system. However, most smokers will tell you that they’ve given up many times, without hassle, for weeks at a time. Some however, will report dull headaches, irritability, restlessness and a battle with increased appetite. In these cases, acupuncture has a role to play.
The bigger problem is usually around the habit of smoking, rather than the physical withdrawals, but if you suffer from any of the above symptoms, go for acupuncture, rather than using the side effects as an excuse to take up smoking again :o )
Happy New Year!
